Skills for Life

  • A year-round life skills program for youth ages 14 & 15 years old living in PHA, Section 8 and scattered site housing.  Provides stipend and monthly TransPass. 
  • Operates Monday through Friday, 4:00-7:00 p.m.

 

English As A Second Language Classes

  • Operates Tuesday & Thursday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
  • For Adults age 18 and over.

 

Adult Diploma Classes

  • Call Scott Boswick (215-683-1563) for details.
  • For Adults age 21 and over.

 

GED Classes

  • Operates Monday & Wednesday, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
  • For Adults age 21 and over.

 

Cosmetology Classes

  • Operates Monday-Friday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
  • For age 14 and over.

 

Summer Career Exploration Program

  • For youth ages 14-18 years old.
  • A six-week paid internship program for youth enrolled in a high school program.
  • Youth ages 16-18 are matched with organizations that meet their career interests.
  • Youth ages 14-16 are enrolled in a workforce development program.

 

Summer Day Camp

  • A six-week summer camp program for children 6 to 13 years.  Offers field trips, enrichment, art, educational and recreational activities.  Breakfast and lunch provided.

Hip-Hop Dance Group

  • Operates Tuesdays, 5:30-8:00 p.m.; Fridays, 5:00-8:00 p.m. for ages 13-18 years old.
  • Operates Monday & Wednesday, 5:30-7:30 p.m. for ages 6-12 years old.          

 

Teen Lounge

  • For boys ages 10-14; Tuesday & Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Beacon Council

  • Meets 1st Monday of the month.
  • Adult Volunteers committed to supporting Beacon programs and strengthening the community.

 

Basketball Program

  • Operates Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 6:00-8:00 p.m.; Saturdays, 9:00-11:00 a.m. (youth); 12:30-5:00 p.m. (adults)
  • For age 9 and over.

Youth Leadership Council

  • Meets Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
  • For youth age 13 and over.

Soccer Program (Star Finder)

  • Operates Thursdays, 6:15-8:00 p.m.
  • For youth in grades 5 through 7.

Wings to the Future

  • The first hour of this program is focused on the needs of adolescent girls (developed by Girl Scouts)
  • The second hour of the program is for participants to socialize and play games.
  • Operates Mondays, 6:00-8:00 p.m. (for grades 7 & 8); Thursdays, 6:00-8:00 p.m. (for grades 5 & 6)

Mentoring Matters In South Philly

  • Mentors children whose parents are incarcerated.
  • For Children/Youth (ages 4-15 years)

  • First time, low to moderate-income homebuyers are prepared for homeownership through budget/credit counseling, foreclosure prevention, assistance with obtaining affordable mortgages, and support throughout the purchase process.

 

Homeowners Emergency Assistance Program

  • Provides assistance to homeowners who are facing foreclosure. This program helps the homeowner to consider all the viable options to save the home and/or resolve the housing situation.

 

PHIL Loans

  • Provides assistance to homeowners with or without credit challenges to find affordable loans for repair in their home. This program does not take into consideration the appraised value of the property.

 

Tax Delinquency

  • Provides assistance to homeowners who are behind on their taxes to get access to an affordable plan to solve the delinquency situation and avoid foreclosure.

Rental and Mortgage Delinquency

  • Provides assistance with available funding to renters and/or homeowners who are behind on their rent or mortgage but need some financial assistance to catch up with their monthly obligation to the landlord or the lender.

 

Predatory Lending Assistance

  • Provides assistance to homeowners who are victims of predatory lending practices. This program also refers homeowners to Legal Assistance to look for remedy for the victims.

Emergency Food Cupboard

  • Provides emergency food to community residents every 90 days.

  • Provides help to families with emergency utilities and weatherization needs.  The program also addresses budgeting and general housing concerns.  Available grants include LIHEAP/UESF/CRISIS.

Truancy Court Case Management

  • Services children 13-15 years old with truancy issues that are referred from the Department of Human Services’ Office of Truancy and Delinquency Prevention.

South Philadelphia EPIC Stakeholders Group

  • Community group in partnership with United Communities and SEMACC that works to address truancy and the underlying reasons for truancy in the area.  Meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at South Philadelphia High School (Broad & Snyder), 5:00-7:00 PM.

South Philadelphia Jr. Stakeholders

  • The Jr. Stakeholders Youth Voice Project program offers hands-on radio broadcasting training to youths. This program will focus on radio broadcasting issues affecting their community, and the enrolled students will be encouraged to report on the diversity of their communities as well as the quality of life issues that affects youths throughout South Philadelphia. The Students meet two (2) times a week. (Tuesdays and Friday 4:30-6:30) at the Houston Center. Every Saturday at 3pm the Radio Program airs on 1540 AM radio. The Youth Voice Project airs on the “New World Radio Station Voice of Khmer” radio program.

Teen Lounge

  • Provides a drop-in center for youth ages 13 to 18.  The program offers homework assistance, job readiness skills, college information, computer access, and recreational activities including games, movies and music.  Operates Monday and Thursday evenings 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Community Development Corporation (CDC)

  • Renovates homes in South Philadelphia to eligible homebuyers with assistance from the United         Communities Housing Counseling Department.

NAC (Neighborhood Advisory Council)

  • The NAC provides assistance with completion of applications for medical benefits, public assistance or other applications that residents may have difficulty completing. The NAC is also responsible for organizing and assisting the community with issues that effect the community around curb appeal, residential and commercial development, open space, side yard and community gardens.

Southeast Philadelphia Collaborative

  • A network of 13 agencies that services youth from 12 to 18 years old in South Philadelphia.  Collaborative-wide programs include: Teen Lounge, Youth Leadership Council, Gardening Project, Career Development Pilot Program, and addressing environmental issues in the area.

    Members, partners and youth meet the last Monday of every month at the School District – South Region Office from 4pm-6pm.

Community Based Prevention Case Management

  • Offers large array of services to clients through referrals, home visits and intensive case management.

  • Case management services for families referred by the Department of Human Services.

After School Program

  • For children ages 6 to 12 in grades K-8 that offers homework assistance, computers, arts & crafts, and recreational activities.  Snacks provided.

Summer Day Camp

  • A six-week summer camp program for children 6 to 12 years.  Offers field trips, enrichment, art, educational and recreational activities.  Breakfast and lunch provided.      

Successful Seniors

  • Older adults meet weekly to enjoy social activities and informational sessions.

AVRP (Anti-Violence Reduction Program)

  • Hands on anti-violence collaboration, which assigns Youth Workers to high-risk adolescents between the age of 10-15 to protect them from becoming the the victim of violence, or the perpetrators of violence, delinquency and/or crime.
