Spring Fair 2007 - United Communities Southeast Philadelphia:

We are pleased to invite you to join United Communities Southeast Philadelphia for our 4th annual Spring Fair. United Communities organized its’ 3rd Spring Fair in 2006 and had over 500 guests that enjoyed food, entertainment, massages, and access to a wide variety of local community resources. Children that attended had the opportunity to have a free physical exam and participated in a variety of planned activities (arts and crafts, dance performances and athletic programs). With the success of the 2006 Spring Fair, United Communities is hoping to increase attendance to over 700 guests and to provide more health-related services and community resources. On Saturday, May 19th (11am-3pm), the fair will take place on the 1900 and 2000 blocks of South 8th Street (Mifflin Street to Snyder Avenue) in addition to space inside Bok High School where United Communities operates a Beacon School.

While United Communities is hosting the event and seeking exposure of agency programs, the focus of this event is on providing community members with an opportunity to learn about the large variety of health services and other resources that are available to them in South Philadelphia. This includes the emphasis on a healthy lifestyle through connecting with health care providers. This year, the Spring Fair will allow community members to have access to health screenings and physicals. These are services that people might not receive otherwise because low-income families served by United Communities are often unable to access adequate health care regularly. Additionally, there will be information from other service providers to enable them to inform the community of their services

Below you can find more details on all of the events that will be taking place at this year's Spring Fair.

As the Spring Fair draws closer and more information becomes available, this page will be updated.  So please check back regularly.

Food
In the spirit of kicking off the summer season, we will be barbecuing hamburgers, hot dogs, and sausages from several grills during the Spring Fair.  Food and beverages will be available for a small fee, in addition to other snacks such as soft pretzels.  Listings of foods, snacks, and beverages along with prices will be posted throughout the Spring Fair.

Entertainment
United Communities organized its’ third annual Spring Fair in 2006 and had over 500 guests that enjoyed food, entertainment, massages, and access to a wide variety of local community resources. Children that attended had the opportunity to have a free physical exam and participated in a variety of planned activities (arts and crafts, dance performances and athletic programs). With the success of the 2006 Spring Fair, United Communities is hoping to increase attendance to 700 guests and to provide more health-related services and community resources.

United Communities is asking for community people and organizations to participate in providing entertainment for the spring fair. Got talent!!! If you are interested in showcasing your talent at the 2007 Spring Fair with a group or solo performance? Sign up today. Complete and hand deliver/mail or fax the attached registration form to us as soon as possible so we can see what you’ve got! Mini-auditions will be held for all performances on Friday, May 4, 2007 from 5-6pm at Southwark House (101 Ellsworth Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147).

Please note: This is a community event and all performances/acts must be age appropriate with no vulgar language or gestures.

We will have a large staging area, music, and DJ. There is an opportunity for you to share your talents with others from the neighborhood. With a goal of having a maximum of 10 groups to perform, we can only extend performances to a maximum of 6 minutes in duration. In addition, all performers will have the opportunity to reserve space at the spring fair to advertise for programs or services and display banners. There would be a nominal donation to reserve one table for the day of the event. To become an entertainment participant, please contact Jesus Soto–Entertainment Co-Chair at 267-236-6026, or via email at JesusSoto@ucsep.org.

Free Health Assessments
We will be providing free health assessments in partnership with various health organizations and hospitals from the region.  This includes physical exams for children, screenings for adults, massage and physical therapy, nutrition education, and additional resources.  More details about this will be forthcoming.

Children's Activities
We will be hosting a wide variety of activities geared towards giving the kids in the community something fun to do.  We do ask that anybody taking part in this be respectful towards other people that would like to play games, and to the people volunteering their time to making this work.  Abusive and/or disrespectful behavior creates a negative vibe on what should be an overwhelmingly positive day, and will not be tolerated.

All of the activities listed below will be taking place in the schoolyard of Southwark School, which is located at the northwest corner of Eighth and Mifflin Streets, across from Bok High School.

Video Game Pavilion
We will have an area set up and dedicated to playing video games on pc, Xbox, and PlayStation 2.  Games will be free, but we will be implementing a ticket system so that everyone gets a fair chance to play.

Times:
Ages 6-11: 11am - 1pm
Ages 12-17: 1pm - 3pm

A list of games may be posted in the days leading up to the Spring Fair.  Or maybe it won't, and we'll just maintain an element of surprise.   Either way, any updates will be posted here, so keep checking back.

Moon Bounce
11am - 3pm

Pretty straight forward.  We will also be implementing a colored ticketing system for kids that would like to play in the moon bounce.

Carnival Games
11am - 3pm
We will be hosting a variety of carnival-type games for the kids.  As of now, we will be having a ring toss, bean bag toss, egg spoon toss, and a duck pond. More details will be forthcoming.

We will be doing face painting for the kids at the Spring Fair.  Again, for this event we will be implementing a ticketing system.  More details will be forthcoming.
